Udupi

After a very peaceful, if a little warm, night's sleep we awoke refreshed and ready for the day.  We had chai and poha for breakfast and then headed out to catch the bus.

The area we are staying in is called Manipal.  We caught a bus to Udupi.  In the centre there is a pedestrian area with many little temples...the area reminded us a bit of Durbar Square in Kathmandu.

After a walk around the temples we headed back to the bus station to catch a bus to Malpe on the coast.  Malpe is famous for the fish market and as we approached the town we saw many fish trucks leaving and ice trucks arriving.

Down at the port we were amazed at the sight of so many brightly coloured trawlers all parked virtually on top of one another. Quite what the etiquette is for getting out we are not sure!

We wandered through the fish market, which was just finishing off for the day.  We then headed down to the beach.  There was a pretty garden with some interesting sculptures ....

We found a tree to sit under as it was extremely hot.  After sitting in the cool breeze for sometime food was calling.

We headed back to the small town but nothing took our fancy so we caught a bus back to Udupi. We found a nice little cafe and enjoyed pav bhaji and dahi Puri followed by sweet lassi.

Back at the bus station we caught the bus back to Manipal, where we walked around the lake before heading back to our accommodation.

We drank chai and snacked on samosa and bread pakora - potato, onion and spice sandwich, dipped in some kind of batter and fried.

After a little rest we went out with our friends to beach for an evening drive along a pretty lane, with the sea on one side and backwards in the other, all lined with coconut trees.  Along the beach we saw lots of little fisherman temples.  We also stopped to feed some puppies.  Our friend told us as couple of the fisherman houses were now himestsyd although this area is still not on the tourist map.  However with the beautiful beach we don't think it will be long.

Back in Udupi we went to a funky student cafe called Zebra Spot and had some amazing Keralan food (although we are actually in Karnataka, not Kerela!).

By the time we got home there was time for a bit of a chat before bed.
