Coconut icecream

Once again we headed to the local market for another not so healthy breakfast of Thai iced tea and donuts.

Back at the hotel we packed our bags as we have to change rooms from the cheap fan room to the expensive (half the size) aircon room.  Luckily once we had packed the chap came to tell us our new room was ready so we moved straight in.

We then headed down to the river for a walk.  We watched a catamaran mooring and tried to work out where it was from as there were only 2 westerners on board.  It appeared that the boat was probably chartered in Thailand.

Along the river there was a chap selling icecream so we decided to have one.  He offered us various flavours and we both ordered a coconut one.  However, as nice as it was, it certainly didn't taste like coconut... perhaps some of the flavours had got mixed up.

As we walked back up the road we noticed policemen at the side of the road, along with lots of mopeds. On further investigation it appeared the police were stopping all motorbikes for random checks.  This was all taking place outside the police station where, by this time, there was quite a queue of people waiting to pay their fines! On speaking to one man he told us he had literally bought the bike a few minutes before and was just heading home.... Unfortunately for him he had his helmet on his handlebars rather than on his head so was queuing to pay his 500 baht fine (approx £12).

We started to head back, via the school street and treated ourselves to some sticky rice and crispy chicken skin and another Thai tea.

Back to the hotel for a rest from the heat and to freshen up, we were sat in our room and heard this sudden noise.  It soon became apparent it was torrential rain on the metal fire escape outside our window. We decided to sit it out and wait for the rain to stop before heading out for dinner.  A small thunderstorm followed before it eventually stopped.

We headed over to the market and one of the stalls where we had been before had a few nice looking things. The lady immediately picked up what she informed us was extra spicy chicken curry, with only a small piece of chicken, so if we bought something, we could have this for free.  We chose a chicken  soup and also a small green mango salad.  She also threw in some free homemade chilli sauce for us to try.  We started with the  chicken curry.  We have learned from previous not to just pour the whole lot over the rice.  We picked out the chicken and vegetables and poured some of the sauce. We were so glad we did, it was super spicy and after a few mouthfuls our mouths were numb.  The mango salad was tasty, if also a little spicy.  We finished off with chicken soup which was a welcome relief!  We did try a small bit of the chilli sauce but sadly by then we didn't really need any more spicy!!
