Not Published Alor Setar
The bus journey was short and we arrived at the jetty. Our next transport was the speed boat to Butterworth. All went well and we arrived in plenty of time to catch a KTM Komuter train to Alor Setar. Another short journey and we were in Alor Star!
The hotel was a 20 minute walk from the station in the midday heat and we were glad to arrive to air conditioning. We checked in, dropped our bags and went exploring. It wasn't that easy to find food in the middle of the day. A lot of places seemed closed. Eventually, we arrived in Chinatown where street stalls and restaurants were beginning to open. We tried a small, very old and authentic looking Chinese restaurant but couldn't decide what to have. In fact, as noone spoke English and noone was eating anything we particularly liked the look of, we left. Around the corner we discovered curry mee. Following, our main we opted for some sweet, watery, jelly dishes for dessert. We have no idea of the name!
We were now down by the river and the sunset was great. We also walked on a short heritage trail and saw some beautiful old buildings in Chinatown and just around the corner was the beautifully lit state mosque. Next, we went shopping!
In Alor Setar there are some huge malls. We think a few of the malls only have some shops open but most units are vacant, having moved to the new mall. We stocked up on Lotus's (that is how it is spelt) on chocolate milk, yoghurt and crisps as we hadn't had these for a while. A special night if treats! Bed followed ...
