Sewage

The tide was out this morning and apparently this makes snorkelling a little more tricky. We walked out of the town centre and our host, who was passing on his motorbike, showed us where to enter the water. We decided to wait a while and continued along the road where we passed many birds and butterflies. We stopped and sat on a bench for a rest. It was next to a local well where people washed themselves and their clothes. Many people said hello and 2 dogs came and sat with us, hoping for some of our spicy tuna sandwiches.

Eventually, we headed back to the entry ladder made from driftwood. Unfortunately, the little area beneath it was full of rubbish. The sea also contained a lot of things you would not want to swim with. It was pretty disgusting but if the corals are surviving we probably will too.

We swam past floating things, through sea grass and the coral started to appear on little patches. There were lots of clams, a few clownfish and we spotted 2 tiny blue nudibranchs. As the depth increased the coral became denser but overall a lot seemed damaged. When we got cold we made our way back. A nasty stinging jellyfish hid amongst the sea grass but we spotted him. We clambered out onto raw sewage beach and walked back home to clean up.

Once refreshed we walked in the other direction towards Culion centre. We took the road that followed the coast and passed lots of friendly people. We passed a lot of poor housing areas on stilts over the water with narrow, wooden walkways connecting them. The houses were barely standing and some damaged ones still stood abandoned from typhoon Yolanda.

We spoke to a friendly old lady and her naughty granddaughter on their balcony. We spoke to another old lady who was unable to walk. She sat in her chair all day overlooking the street. She told us that all she wanted to do was to go for a walk. Very sad.

As darkness fell we made our way back. We chose to eat in a very cute restaurant, with a very cute dog and a very cute little girl on a swing. The swing was in the centre of the restaurant and the girl and the dog played whilst we ate. After dinner we walked home to bed.
