Routine

We didn't make it out early. No surprise there then! We were too busy eating breakfast, sipping coffee and doing some R&R. When we did make it out for lunch, we stopped at our local banh my stall. Banh my with iced Jasmine tea. Great!

Our route today took us to a more local area of the city and we crossed yet another of the Dan Nang bridges. First stop was the multi faith temple, the only problem was it had a big sign outside stating - closed to tourists since 2020. Thanks for such a warm welcome!

Next we searched for various restaurants, local markets and a church. The famous pink Da Nang cathedral was built by the French in the style of Notre Dame - we also could not go in this one as mass was taking place. The market was pretty busy but we did purchase a fancy jelly, coconut, banana drink thingy which was nice. One of us also bought a t-shirt at a crazy local jumble sale!

Down by the river we bought the biggest bag of soya milk ever, for half the usual price. The street seller was right next to a cafe we were looking for. It was an old Vietnamese Cong style cafe. We expected it to look like something special but it pretty much looked like the other 2500 coffee shops in Da Nang and was fairly pricey. We did however stumble across another little coffee shop that looked far more authentic just around the corner.

As it started to get dark we spotted a really busy restaurant crammed with locals. We joined them for a fish noodle dish with crispy things, prawns and the odd piece of jellyfish. It was good. Next we visited a nice temple. It had beautiful paintings inside and some huge Buddha statues in the gardens.

On our way home we saw a man making noodles. A lady was rolling out the dough and the man was putting it on a cylinder and then cutting it super quickly into very thin noodles. It was great to watch. A little down the street there was a group of ladies at the side of the street eating something that looked quite interesting. We decided to join in and ordered what they had (banh xeo). It was a small folded over pancake which was packed with 'stuff' and we had some rice paper and vegetables too. Basically we wrapped the lot in rice paper to make spring rolls. We did get in a bit of a mess and the stall owner very kindly came and sat with us and helped make them all.  They came with a delicious peanut dipping sauce.

At the street food stalls they have small cups and water or tea that you can drink. We think the multi use cups are a great thing for the environment and save a lot of water. All you do is pick up a cup, drink from it and put it back ready for the next person to use! Yuk!

We took a different route home and came across a Christmas shop which one of us was very excited about.
